Art and architecture enthusiasts will surely know who we are talking about: he is James Michalopoulos, an American painter and sculptor known for his colorful and original representations of New Orleans.
Born in 1951. Michalopoulos began to devote himself to painting only in the late 70s, depicting the landscapes around his home in Burgundy, and then moved on to the evocative and industrial urban landscapes of San Francisco and Boston.
He was then fascinated by the architectural forms of New Orleans, which he has interpreted in his most famous paintings since the early 80s.
Attracted by the incredible mix of beauty and decadence, as well as the music that animates New Orleans, Michalopoulos has made this city a muse for his extraordinary portraits.
Colorful and alive, his paintings tell of a vital and realistic New Orleans, but also dreamlike and surreal, suspended between dream and reality.
No one else like him has been able to represent in such a profound and truthful way the lights and shadows of the great and legendary city of Louisiana crossed by the Mississippi and millions of different souls, sounds and energies.

The portraits that James Michalopoulos painted in his New Orleans have been collected in a prestigious box entitled “Michalopoulos Notecards & envelopes”.
Part of these works were already depicted in an exclusive volume also produced by Faenza Printing in 2021.
